Rosemary Goddard Centre

The Mere and District Day Centre for Older People

Charity Registration: 1033900

Who We Are

The Rosemary Goddard Centre (Mere and District Day Centre) is a registered charity established in 1988. Its main aim is to provide a safe place where otherwise isolated or housebound elderly people of Mere and the surrounding district can meet up for social and stimulating activities, have a hot nutritious meal and sometimes go on day trips.

The Day Centre employs a paid organiser supported by a rota of volunteers who assist in activities and serving meals and drinks. The Board of Trustees provides the overall management, support and strategic direction. We provide our services under a contract with Wiltshire Council who provide approximately half of our income; the remainder comes from fund-raising and donations.

Our Impact

The Day Centre contributes to the quality of life of the elderly people, so that they can remain in their own homes and communities rather than going into residential care, with the often inevitable consequences of having to sell their home, and the effect this can have on them and their families, as well as the extra cost to the taxpayer.

The Rosemary Goddard Day Centre is a superb example of what can be achieved when charities are given active and committed support by local voluntary effort and generosity.

Who We Can Help

Do you know someone who is over 60 and isolated?

Do you know a carer who needs a break for one or two days a week?

Referrals to the Day Centre are welcome from GPs, social workers, clergy, relatives, neighbours, local organisations or self-referrals.

What We Do

We provide:

  • Companionship
  • A hot meal
  • Activities
  • Outings

Our activities promote independence, social interaction as well as enjoyment. Furthermore, the Organiser and some of the volunteers have been trained in basic skills to provide a service where the well-being of the elderly people is monitored and safeguarded.

How YOU Can Help

Volunteering

Can you spare a few hours a month for a worthwhile cause? Would you like to help the local community and be part of a friendly, lively team? We need session helpers, washer uppers, and drivers who can deliver the hot lunches from Fives Court in Mere to the Day Centre. The work is very rewarding since it helps to keep open the Centre much loved by all the older people who enjoy going there.

If so, contact Sandie Hawkins (see below) to discuss the opportunities.

Making a Donation

The Day Centre receives a small grant from Wiltshire Council to cover the cost of rent, insurance and part of the salary of the Organiser. All day centre activities and provisions therefore must be met through fundraising and donations.

Please support the Day Centre, and the worthwhile contribution it makes to the local community. Quality of life in old age matters so much, and by providing these services we shall lessen problems in the future.
